The Making of Red Sonja
Last Updated: October 22, 2009

She will be a Triad Toys Otaku 1.2 with the TT Auburn Head (the one in the hard plastic package)

She will also be based on the comic book styling, not the movie

RS 1

First worked up a paper patterns (working on and off the figure several times

Then cut the pieces out of sheet aluminum, kept adjusting the head hole till it worked, bent the strap and drilled holes at the end to connect to the bodice

RS 2

Then fit the two pieces on the figure.

Once satisfied with the fit, I glued the two pieces together (and added a small amount of tape to secure where the top piece had been cut open for the head hole.

RS 3

Then added GF-9 Green Stuff epoxy on top and underneath, completely covering the piece.

Once the epoxy was dry, I added micro holeless beads in places for texture.

What is great about Green Stuff is it stays partially flexible so the piece could be bent a little more if necessary and would still fit over the neck.

RS 5

Sprayed a primer coat using black Krylon Fusion paint.

After the primer was completely dry I painted all over with Games Workshop Boltgun Metal paint.

After that I dry-brushed lightly over the beads and other areas with GW Mithril Silver as a highlight.

You can see the color differences and shadows better in person and will hopefully show better in the final photos (metals and metallics behave in their own way in light/flash)

It will also fit a little lower and closer in the final photo.

Sonja 6

The bodice is made from Whiting & Davis flat mesh from the 20's, 30's or 40's. It is either silver plated or silver. The jump rings attaching the mesh to the shoulder piece are silver. The jump ring connecting the front is nickel. The thong strap is faux leather, attched by silver crimping rings.

The back is the solution I came up with to keep the bodice snug...it is because the shape of the Otaku body does not allow something to be drawn horizontally tight....it always creeps down. But it will be covered by the hair.

I am thinking about "spot" leafing the shoulder piece so that it is closer in tone to the mesh.

I'm not 100% happy with the bodice but after 3 tries and 12 hours, it'll do. I will try and find a way to snug the bottom up a bit, maybe metallic silver thread or very small gauge wire.

Now to take a break.....

Sonja Boots

We have boots! After 5 failed attempts trying to cover boot feet, I gave up and decided to go for the look in the comic books which is form fitting boots, a look that cannot be achieved by boot feet, at least not by me.

The boots are made of REAL leather, 2 pieces sewn together in the front, then basically sewn/laced "onto" the feet/legs. The soles are the rubber soles from a pair of DID Aragorn boots glued onto the bottom leather and then trimmed by more leather. I added the buckles on the straps for a little something shiny.

Sonja leg stuff
Added the leg armor thingys. Made of leather and round silver HotFix studs
Sonja Arms

Right arm band is brown leather with ties topped with what was previously a steel and brass earring.

Left arm band is tied on with brown leather and was previously a sterling silver ring.

Sonja Dagger

Dagger is purchased and is hard plastic. I repainted it and added leather on the hilt. The sheath is beige leather stained with furniture touch up pen, aluminum sheeting, brass Hotfix studs, brass buckle and brown leather.
Sonja Sword

Sword (hard plastic/resin) and basic plain resin sheath were purchased as part of someone else's custom figure so don't know where they originated.

The sheath is covered in beige leather stained with furniture touch up pen, aluminum sheeting, brass Hotfix studs, brass buckle and brown leather.

I have metal sword letter openers that are cool but some are too short and others perfect but too long.

Sonja Body
I scrapped the bodice and redid it. Won't be snugging it up...keeping it loose and airy for her for when she does battle (nothing worse than metal sticking to your sweat)/ Also moved the one sterling ring to the right arm, and found an outstanding silver ring today at a yard sale. Both are tied on with brown leather. The skirt is made of the same silver/silver plated Whiting and Davis mesh sewn on to a leather an metal ring belt. The dagger sheath is attached with brass rings and chain and then tied around the leg with brown leather. The sword sheath is attached with brass rings and chain. I am much happier with the new bodice and change in armbands.
Outfit Redone

Raised the sword end so that it is not dragging on the ground anymore.

Redid the gloves (see below left)

Put silver leaf (aluminum alloy) on the shoulder piece.

New Glove

Right: Hands are covered in custom tinted PlastiDip. The rest of the gauntlet is leather with metal buckles. The PlastiDip will be touched up a little as will the leather so that there is a more continuity of color (although the color matches closer in person than in the camera's eye and light.

Left: New all leather gloves

RS 4

Here is the head minus the hair and makeup (will do a little more cleaner up on her). I also tried a little eye opening that I need to refine.

I am going to attempt re-rooting (gulp), mainly because it looks better (hopefully) and the wig I had in mind is just not good enough.

Sonja Rooted

So after about 40 hours of rooting hair, here she is.

Now for the next scary step.........curling (hair, not the sport)

Roller Hell
This doesn't look like the instruction pictures
I want my mommy!
Sonja Unfurled After about 4 hours of draining and drying rolled up, I carefully unpinned and slid the straws out so that the hair could dry completely. Taking 2 nights and several hours (o.k. breaks are in there) I finally managed to finish the face painting. Still not 100% happy with the eyes and eyelashes but it IS the best I can do with my shaky hands. Used Games Workshops acrylics and Prismatic colored pencils, then sealed with MSC dull spray and used acrylic gloss on the lips and eyes. Sonja Face
